Marc Rice is a lifelong resident of Tioga County who grew up on the family homestead and currently lives there with his wife (Sara) and their two daughters (Whitney and Emmelyn). Marc is a 2003 graduate of Wellsboro Area High School and he continued his education by obtaining an Associates in Risk Management and Project Management Professional (PMP) designation.
Marc grew up in a typical working-class family where he started working on a local farm at a young age, building his work ethic and learning responsibility. Farming is one of the best first jobs Marc could have had. It was hard work, physically and mentally, but at the end of the day it was very rewarding.
During high school Marc worked part time jobs in the construction and service industry. This work experience taught him the importance of communication, working together and problem solving. On the construction site, critical thinking and problem solving were skills he learned that allowed him to complete projects efficiently and on time.
Marc started his career at the County in 2004, working in the Maintenance department, where he displayed his work ethic and started to build his knowledge of County operations and local Government.
In 2009 Marc was promoted to the Risk Manager position where he successfully reduced accidents and injuries. The reduction in claim frequency reduced the General Liability and Workers Compensation insurance premiums, saving the County tens of thousands of dollars annually.
In 2012 Marc was promoted to the Director of Risk Management and since that time has been recognized on several occasions with awards from the County Commissioners Association for his excellent loss control work.
Marc has also been responsible for leading and managing over twenty-five million dollars in construction projects.
Marc is a proven leader with eighteen years of experience in County Government. He possess’ strong leadership skills in: problem-solving, teamwork and effective communication. During his time in County Government, he has also built relationships at the Local, State and Federal level.
Marc announced his candidacy for County Commissioner to allow his experience in County government to provide consistency and continuity during a time of transition. As a commissioner, one of his priorities is to improve communication with the public and ensure transparency in County government. He plans to achieve this by being accessible to the public to ensure timely response to any issues. He will also work to improve communication by providing budgets and plans electronically to allow easier access for the public to view. His other top priorities include continuing to operate the County efficiently to maintain a balanced budget. His experience working on the budget during his time in the Commissioner’s office gives him a unique opportunity to see where efficiencies can be
improved.
Marc is also looking forward to work with local fire departments and ambulance associations to address emergency response issues in the rural communities. He feels this can be achieved by working with individual departments to identify their specific needs.
Marc looks forward to meeting the citizens of Tioga County this coming year and he is excited to start working together to bring meaningful change to Tioga County.
